World Series of Poker Registration Up At Least 20%

Registration isn’t over for all events at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) yet, but the total number of entries is already 20% more than last year.

Official statistics from the 41st World Series of Poker currently running at the Rio in Las Vegas indicate that through the first 56 events, there have been 65,647 entries, surpassing last year’s total entries including the main event of 60,875. And this year’s main event registration numbers have yet to be recorded!

I thought interest in casino poker might be slowing last year with the 8% drop in TV ratings.  Maybe, I was wrong.  It can happen.  Maybe people still have dreams of a dollar and a chip.

Most poker on TV sucks these days, hence the decline in ratings. But popularity of playing and actually winning, hasn’t waned as much.

Can’t disagree with you there. I’ve become bored by watching on TV.

Televised poker blows because they feel they need to drum up drama to increase ratings. Sort of like trying to turn the players into the same lousy actors on the typical reality show. When the half an hour is over, you end up seeing about 6 hands of poker played. I truly think the viewers want to obtain the education of studying the nuances of how the pros play their hands, but instead we are stuck focusing on Helmuth’s tilts and attempts at turning poker pros into celebrities. It’s really a shame.

Stu, I think the packaging actually works for TV and brings new people to the game, but it’s a turnoff to anyone that actually plays the game.

Personally, not a fan because I like the nuance.
