Between twitter, blogs and various forums I’ve been reading about how cab drivers in Las Vegas have been getting worse. I’ve read that some have become abusive and more have taken to long hauling customers to get a few extra bucks.
As usual, I had a few cab rides and ran into good, bad and ugly drivers.
- The Good – There are still nice guys driving cabs that are personable and take you directly from point A to point B with no funny business. These drivers were the majority for my trip.
- The Bad – May be personable or not and may take a longer trip than necessary. Sometimes a nice driver can offset going a little out of the way. As long as that trip is not obscene.
- The Ugly – This driver long hauled me and tried to short change me. This guy was the biggest jerk driver I’ve ever had and the kind of person I’ve read about online. Thankfully there was only one.
I tip pretty well (definitely above average) with good and even some of the bad (mediocre) drivers. I think it’s very fair to reward good service. However, when you give me sub-par service you’re going to receive a sub-par tip.
When the “ugly” driver tried to short change me and got aggressive with me I yelled back at him and waited for the proper change.
Bottom line there are still good cab drivers in Las Vegas, but it’s the unfortunate minority that get talked about more often. Cheers to the good guys and jeers to the bad guys.

So true. I feel sorry for the decent, honest cabbies in Vegas, because they have to deal with people assuming that they’re trying to rip the tourists off. Those few bad apples really do ruin it for everyone. You’d think that alone would make the honest cabbies police their own, however they can.
