I’ve never been inside the Riviera on the Las Vegas strip and thus don’t write about it. The Riviera is one of the oldies on the strip and even though everything I’ve read or heard is pretty bad I figured I’d share some news.
The Riviera seems to be prepping for bankruptcy.
Riviera Holdings Corp. of Las Vegas reiterated Friday that it’s in talks with creditors about restructuring its debt – but continued to avoid comment on whether Starwood Capital Group LLC is preparing to take over Riviera through a prepackaged bankruptcy.
This comes as no surprise to me as an old property on the north end of the strip doesn’t seem to have much shine. I’m curious to see what happens to the property in the future. The facade is still very recognizable, but that probably won’t save it.

If it counts for anything, I was there back in 98. My sister and I saw The Amazing Jonathan and also ate at their Mexican restaurant. The food was okay. I don’t remember much about the propery.
They had one of those gimmicks where you could play $40 worth of slots for $20, but you had to play on special machines and you could only cash out if you hit one of three jackpots. Neither of us did, so we got to pick prizes. I picked a Riv polo shirt and ballcap (gave the cap to my dad) and she took some sort of overnight bag. That’s the only gambling we did there.
I thought I remember reading that their Nickeltown area had a nice, cheap snack bar in it. Guess that’s not enough to save it from bankruptcy!
I’ve been inside the Riv. Walked in, didn’t care for it, walked out. Can’t say I’m surprised about the bankruptcy.
