There was a time in my life when I consumed hot dogs regularly. They were considered smart people food. My consumption of hot dogs has greatly decreased since moving to Las Vegas. A small part of the reason is that there are many other options.
The main reason that I rarely eat hot dogs in Las Vegas is that the quick bites aren’t the snappy Sabrett dirty water dogs I grew up with. The dirty water dogs in Las Vegas just aren’t the same. The fancy hot dogs are usually just a bit too fancy. Additionally, they often use those same type of hot dogs that I don’t like. Blah.
I recently took a shot in the dark and tried a couple of fancy hot dogs in a part of Las Vegas I’ve never been to. I visited Dirt Dog on Rainbow well south of anywhere I’ve been in Las Vegas. It’s clear that I don’t leave the Summerlin area enough when I’m not on the Strip or downtown Las Vegas.
I briefly mentioned this LA-based hot dog shop at Travel Vegas when writing about new restaurants at the Grand Bazaar Shops at Bally’s. Since writing this article in June, I forgot that ALL OF THE HOT DOGS ARE WRAPPED IN BACON. The light bacon wrap actually provides the snap in the hot dog that the majority of hot dogs in Las Vegas are missing.
We split The House Dog (pictured above) with bacon thousand island and green chili spread and the Red Dog with spicy tomato chili and chipotle aioli. Next time I’ll order the latter without the overdose of onions. Both hot dogs were surprisingly really good!
I preferred The House Dog but I think that’s because the Red Dog had too many onions.
I liked the spice on the Red Dog and will probably try it again next time. Hot dogs were always a quick bite in between meals. I was very surprised when I realized that I stuffed for hours after essentially eating one hot dog.
I enjoyed myself at Dirt Dog and was happy to explore a new part of Las Vegas. The surprises continued when I couldn’t get the thought of the two hot dogs out of my head and mouth two days later. I’m not going to pay $6.25 for a hot dog often but these were so good that I’ll definitely return.
I’d love if they served half dogs. This would allow me to sample more creations without having to cut dogs in half to play sharesies.
Dirt Dog has a location in front of Bally’s and on Rainbow south of everything (8390 S Rainbow Blvd). You can find the locations here. You can find menus, pictures and more information here.
